Artificial turf<\/a> is a unique material that comes with its own set of terminology. Our artificial turf glossary has everything you need to know about synthetic grass, from adhesive to Zeolite Max. By the end of this read, you\u2019ll be an expert on all things artificial grass!<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Adhesive<\/strong>
Artificial turf\u2019s adhesive bonds the different parts of the material together. The adhesive is used to attach the seams to the inserts to the base. It\u2019s a water-based material made from urethane and\/ or epoxy.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Backing<\/strong>
Artificial turf\u2019s backing<\/a> is what the fiber tufts are secured to. Backing is most commonly made from either latex or polyurethane. Stronger materials like polyurethane result in a more durable, long-lasting material.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Color<\/strong>
Artificial turf comes in a wide range of colors, so you can choose one that suits your taste and matches the region you live in.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Compaction<\/strong>
Refers to an increase in density. The base area underneath your artificial turf installation should be compacted to ensure a seamless final result.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Crumb Rubber<\/strong>
A material commonly used as infill. Crumb rubber is made from recycled tires and can either be ambient or cryogenic.\u00a0 SGW strongly recommends against the use of crumb rubber infill in any installation as there have been reports of harmful chemicals.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Denier<\/strong>
The unit used to describe the mass density of fibers.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Density<\/strong>
How close the tufts are to one another. Or, the mass of turf fibers per unit of volume.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Drainage<\/strong>
Drainage<\/a> is the part of artificial turf\u2019s design that enables it to wash away water and other liquid materials efficiently.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Durability<\/strong>
The ability of a material to withstand regular use and the elements.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Envirofill<\/strong>
An infill material made from acrylic-coated sand. Envirofill<\/a> helps moderate the temperature of artificial turf.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Extrusion<\/strong>
How each individual turf blade is formed<\/a>. Extrusion is the process of turning liquid plastic into individual solid fibers and can be used to create blades of many different shapes, such as \u201cW\u201d and \u201cU\u201d shaped turf blades.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Face Weight<\/strong>
The weight of artificial turf minus its backing material. The greater the face weight, the more dense the turf fibers. At Synthetic Grass Warehouse, our products range from 50 to 100 ounces per square yard.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Fall Zone Safety Rating<\/strong>
Refers to a material that meets the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Guidelines for fall safety; used in reference to playground systems.<\/a><\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Fiber\/Filament<\/strong>
An individual blade of artificial grass.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Galvanized Nail<\/strong>
A nail coated with zinc to prevent oxidation or rusting. Galvanized nails are used for construction.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Gauge<\/strong>
Refers to the distance between stitch rows. The optimal gauge will depend on the weight of an artificial turf style.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Infill<\/strong>
The material between turf fibers. Infill is usually made from rubber or sand and helps ensure proper drainage and prevent matting.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Luster<\/strong>
A shining, light-reflective quality.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Memory<\/strong>
A material\u2019s tendency to return to its original shape after a constraint has been removed.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Monofilament<\/strong>
A single filament of synthetic fiber.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Non-Galvanized Nail<\/strong>
A nail not coated with zinc used to secure artificial turf during installation<\/a>.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Nylon<\/strong>
A resilient fiber used in artificial turf blades.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Perforations<\/strong>
Holes in artificial turf backing to allow for proper drainage.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Permeable<\/strong>
A material\u2019s ability to let gas or liquids pass through it.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Pile Height<\/strong>
The length of an artificial turf fiber.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Polyethylene<\/strong>
A soft plastic used in most face yarns.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Polymer<\/strong>
The chemical molecules that make up synthetic fibers, infill and artificial turf backing.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Polypropylene<\/strong>
A coarse plastic used in thatch yarn or artificial grass putting greens.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Polyurethane<\/strong>
A material used to coat artificial grass backing to secure its fibers.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Powerbroom<\/strong>
A unique tool used for de-matting artificial turf.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Seam<\/strong>
Where two panels of synthetic turf are joined together.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Silica Sand<\/strong>
A common sand variety consisting of broken-down quartz, minerals or rocks that measure between one-sixteenth and two millimeters in diameter.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Square Foot<\/strong>
Unit of measurement used in artificial turf installation.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Stitch<\/strong>
A loop of yarn that connects one material to another.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Stitch Rate<\/strong>
The number of stitches per row \u2013 typically, how many stitches per inch of artificial grass.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Synthetic<\/strong>
Refers to an inorganic, man-made material.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Thatch<\/strong>
Textured yarn used below the face yarn to enhance the turf\u2019s ability to recover.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Total Weight<\/strong>
The total weight of artificial grass, including the backing material. SGW\u2019s products range from 75-130 total weight in ounces.<\/p> <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Tufted<\/strong>

Tuft Bind<\/strong>
